Head of the department of Vaucluse, Avignon is located at the confluence of the Rhone and the Durance. It is thus bordering the departments of Gard and Bouches-du-Rhone. The city, vibrant and dynamic, is now a real tourist and cultural hub. In 2000, it was designated "European City of Culture."
It is known worldwide as a former papal city. In 1309 in the days of Pope Clement V, Avignon became the residence of the popes. In total, nine popes who will succeed in the Palace of the Popes.
