Head of the department of Vaucluse, Avignon is located at the confluence of the Rhone and the Durance. It is thus bordering the departments of Gard and Bouches-du-Rhone. The city, vibrant and dynamic, is now a real tourist and cultural hub. In 2000, it was designated "European City of Culture."
